Another year, another hurricane. I’ve lived in Florida for over 30 years, yet the intensity and unpredictability of these storms never cease to amaze me. You’d think that after living in a place like this for so long, I’d be accustomed to hurricane season by now, and while I suppose that’s true to a certain extent, I still must admit to feeling a small degree of surprise whenever I learn that a storm is actually headed my way.
Such was the case with Hurricane Irma, who barreled through Central Florida late last night, leaving a rather impressive path of destruction in her wake. Regarding said destruction, thankfully my home was spared from any significant damage. In fact, the damage was quite minor, cosmetic even.
Irma managed to take down the last two remaining shutters off the front of the house, but that was about the extent of the damage that she caused. This was the same stubborn set of shutters that somehow managed to remain in tact even after Hurricane Matthew came through last year and took down the matching set on the other front window. Apparently this last set wasn’t going down without a fight, but in the end, Irma won that fight. They were only decorative shutters (and ugly ones at that), so I suppose that an argument could be made that Hurricane Irma actually did us a favor by taking them down. The hubster had been meaning for a while now to take them down himself and replace them with actual functional shutters, and now thanks to good old Irma’s visit last night, the first half of that project has been taken care of for him. So I guess there’s that. Silver linings and whatnot.
In addition to taking the shutters down, she knocked out the power late last night, and it’s been out ever since. There’s really no predicting when it will come back on. Could be a day. Could be a week. Who knows? Waiting for its eventual return is proving to be in exercise in patience to say the very least, that’s for sure! There’s a curfew in effect around town until sometime later on this evening, and so here I sit dictating some random thoughts into my phone’s recorder, with the intention of eventually posting it all as a blog entry.
Admittedly, I am the world’s worst blogger. To say that I am inconsistent at it would be a gross understatement. But I’ve had a lot on my mind for the last couple of months, more so than usual, and so I thought that maybe taking another stab at the whole blogging thing might prove beneficial in terms of clearing out some of that mental clutter that’s been keeping me up at night recently. Perhaps turning my mental clutter into a blog might even restore a sense of clarity that my weary mind has been lacking for a while now. Who knows? Maybe blogging won’t accomplish any of that. But then again, maybe it will. There’s only one way to find out…
